Electric Africa

extra extra! dailyleftover, as i start to enjoy'n this.
A very eclectic one that is ...
I had to play you'll some reggae tunes ..as most great African artist always putt some reggae tunes on their albums, that i rarely play but are as good as their funky stuff and contain also some great organ and synth work, i'd putt some behind each other ..before i had had to give it up for Julie Coker, the greatist voice of Africa. From there a wild track of Nguenang, Ivory Coast hottest find, first release on Musique Mondiale records that to me was only known for its Manding stuff >LISTEN TO THIS hot hot hot!
To celebrate the vinyl version of the African Pearls compilations that was running my ears already for a long time since Sterns putt these cd's in the world i'd thought lets spill some fuel for fire. As imho. the best tracks from that double cd of Electric Mali are finally scratched in black vinyl i putt my wallet up and now i am enjoying these on the decks.... i hope you will do the same!! [reup 14022012]
(sorry for the volume burst but that Idrissa Soumaoro tracks is so unbelievable good that i couldn't temper myself)

Tribute to William Onyeabor

hi there suckers! I dont have much to mention here, as you probably know whats up here. A tribute to the man from Enugu, Nigeria.
The name Enugu comes from the two Igbo words enu Ugwu, or Top of the hill. Known for many things but for us only counts a place that spawned some serious synth records as it was also the place of Goddy Oku's Godiac Studio. In companionship of a collection of synths like Moog and Elka, William Onyeabor created from end 70's a rare collection of tracks on his own Wilfims label that is unlike anything else coming from Africa or even the whole world at that time. Under the influence of plunky spacy lo-fi funk and some fine (never credited) female vocals William Onyeabor gave fans his moral advice and wisdom for a better tomorrow that never came.

Anything You Sow
One early morning, I went to pray to my God in Heaven
And I asked God why we are suffering so much in this world
My God said to me. "My son, listen well............
If you plant cassava, expect cassava during your harvest my son
If you sow yam, expect yam during your harvest my child
If you plant trouble, expect trouble during your harvest my son
If you sow goodness, expect goodness during your harvest my child"
Anything you sow.......... you will reap during harvest, my people.

Today Chief Onyeabor still lives in Enugu picking the keys once ina while for the love of god and still for a better tomorrow.
So here it is; Tribute to the King of Enugu.

S-American Fantasy Express - part 1
Carnaval season started this week (11 November at 11:11 a.m.) so a reason to visit S-America, home of the medicine against almost everything; Music!
But wait, before you going to change for your peacock suit -it is all a bit too early for that. With this dailyleftover we first let some sunshine in our heads with some beautiful cosmical latin before we exercise our muscles with the loco Salsa, Samba, Charanga, Merengue and Batucada ...so take the couch out and make some space amigos .. bailar exitos [refresh 18082010]

Bigi Pokoe [music of Surinam]
pulled out some Surinam music for my own personal fun but i think nice to share it with you'll. As i think most of you people don't have a clue what to expect here, this music spawned some real HOT dancehall nights. Kasèko with it's Big Drum Bass and FAT Brass sound is what you get. but as all is great we leave much space for almost everything ..some Surinam made Funk, Calypso, Reggae, Afrobeat and even a great rap cover of Dillinger's Cocaine In My Brain will pass the Dutchie from the left hand side :) ..so turn your bass up

for your information :)

Live at Club World

wow another dailyleftover!
:) hello my virtual audience
I had this thing already some time in mind, as CRISIS is the word of today. Many seem to have no clue what is going on and been blindfolded by deadly comfort for too long ... anyway nobody knows tomorrow ...so lets dance our way trough it

Crisis Money Struggle, so this means great African tunes, starting with the great tune from Monomono led by mr. Haastrup. Crazy keys in the Lightning Power Of Awareness is all i can say. Second track is from a reissue of the The Peace, a band from Zambia. This reissue is quality wise similair to most other old african records and probably mastered from an mp3 file that floated on the www for some time. But anyways this records stands out and rocks aslike the similar W.I.T.C.H. records. Track 3 is a fine Guitar piece by Smahila & The S.B.'s about what you can do with money(imho the most sung about issue on African records) Smahila most know for his afrobeat track on the Afrodisiac Records 12", and as far as i know that was a one time only that he made Afrobeat on this imho boring Lp (African Movement on A-side), and he found his very great own style after that. #4 James Danso i only have one record Makossa and is just a nice afro tune that seemd to fit before Diamond 3 downfall of man. We slow down with Mochico Bay into a percussion beat with great brass parts. Track 7 comes from the long unknown but now already legendary LP of Pax Nicholas And The Nettey Family reissued by DJ Soulpusher who gave us the great voodoofunk blog. He mentions that although travelling Africa for a long time he never did find such a Afrobeat gemm again, but that is maybe also because he found the love for Disco, African Disco that is ..but as a real Funk brother he had to excuse himself many times for playing disco before he said outloud that he was a disco man by heart :) anyways may he discover many nice tunes for us in his next travel. Joe Mensah after this. A track i have in my heart for a long time because it has those nice little freaky things hanging on a straight rhythm, a beautiful Tribute To Nigeria that is. Victor Olaiya's Omelebele, what can is say, a great artist who made many great tunes... [[edit: sorry for the sound quality is this tracks]]
Prince V. Jala Osazuwa made few records with outstanding afro beats and so this track found its way into this dailyleftover for you to ear. Mr. Ofege here with for me a great track from his superb solo album Evolution and ending with Frank Fyne ...what will be will be
gotta go, C'yah

HIGHLIFE

Announcement billboard of a concert by A.B. Crentsil placed on the streets, painted by Mark Anthony.

Ehuru Huru A Ebetwo (no situation is permanent)
In general we can say that Highlife tells about common problems of life and deal with a wide variety of subjects, urban aswell rural, modern as traditional, true events but also fables.
The guitar Highlife dancebands were very popular in 70's Ghana and had a big influence on the society. A concert of Highlife bands usually started with a theatre play around a certain theme before the bands performance. It seems that at first urban life and social mobility were the predominant themes in Highlife songs. It reflected the high society in towns. In that early period Highlife probably played a modernizing role by connecting these new problems by refering to the older wishdom and tales. Like the early troubadour traveling from town to town telling news, tales and wishdom accompanied by music or the elders sitting under the tree teaching the young, storytelling is actually the main aspect of Highlife. Daily problems that are recognised by people and tell how they could cope with them. Old wishdom is updated and again spread by the songs and records. Oneliners from the lyrics are picked up and used in daily language, written down on houses and cars (transport vans) in the streets.
Highlife originated at the end of the 19th century at the Ghana coastal area and could then still be seperated in two different styles. The horn orchestras that played in the decent ballrooms and the guitarbands that toured the workers bars. These guitar orientated dancebands played less the western influenced popular tunes as their music was more African rhythm driven and about the struggle of daily life. In the 50's danceband period, Highlife became very popular over the whole south of Ghana and parts of Nigeria. The electric guitar became the most prominent instrument and by its 70's toppingtime it is spread all over Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and also Congo.
Highlife comes in various forms, influenced by many other styles of music and usually with its own genre name and dances. What i bring you here is very up-up tempo Highlife stuff, rhythmical drum changes accompanied by freaky organs and great guitars and great voices. These are long tracks so i can imagine your short-attention span starts to speak when listnin to this for the first time, but i assure you it grows on you.
I do not understand the lyrics, but for example the first track by Alex Konadu - Adamfo Pa [Good Friend], it expresses the sorrows of someone who has lost a very good friend. That person becomes confused and start to behave real strange by his extreme sadness about the death.
After the first hour i'd slow it down with some great classics by Vis-a-Vis band and for the endpiece i let you hear a some copper by Asiakwa Brass Band who had a very own style as you will hear. Let me know if you like and i am looking forward to bring you more of this band, or other wicked tunes ..
nuff said, enjoy here [refresh 14022011]
